back to a backpack?
May 11, 2012
I’ve been lugging my laptop in a shoulder bag practically everywhere I go – around town, over the bridge, down to the subway, etc., and I think it’s starting to take a toll on my right shoulder. It feels so counterproductive to walk out of yoga class and immediately throw 10 pounds of computer on one side of my body. So I’m turning to you for help. Outside the halls of school, is wearing a backpack a total fashion disaster?

Sometimes they’re necessary! I have a Jon Hart one that I love. It’s awesome quality and waterproof, so I’m not worried if I have my laptop and it’s raining. They also come in such fun colors!
These are entirely too cute to be thought of as a “disaster”
True, Miranda!
I think if you wear the right type, it would be fine. Avoiding the My Little Pony backpacks in favor of an all black, possibly leather one, like number 5, which I love btw.
They’re really nice looking – agreed, esp no. 5. There’s another question you need to ask – which is, is it fashionable to hobble everywhere and never wear heels because you’ve twisted your back badly?
Having had not a lot of back problems, but more than a typical 28-year-old (sciatica, slipped discs, general crookedness), I am a big fan of backpacks. I even carry my laundry to the laundromat and sometimes grocery shop with my backpacking pack! For typical daily use and non-wilderness travel, I went with a tried-and-true North Face Borealis. I waited (and waited and waited) until they released an LE color scheme that I liked and I wound up with a pink and purple number with neon green trim. My philosophy was that I’d rather have a backpack that screamed “Hey, Yo! I’m a rad backpack!” than one that looked like it was trying to pretend not to be a backpack.
Especially when the best farmer’s market is 10 blocks from your house.. backpacks are the freaking best. I too am a decrepit 20something year old and if I wear a bag (like my camera bag) on one shoulder for an entire day, I can feel it the next day. So yeah, cute backpacks are my friend. And my little sister, who has arthritis (I KNOW, what is wrong with us? Why are we so broken!) has two of the cutest backpacks ever! One is purple and sparkly and the other is this crazy grey bowser style bag with big spikes. She totally makes them work.
