photo friday: find your way home

January 13, 2012

Less than an hour’s vaporetto ride from tourist-packed Venice lies the tiny island of Burano, Italy. Step off the boat and walk into the pages of a storybook…

Each little house along the canal is painted a vivid, saturated color. Hot pink, mustard yellow, robin’s egg blue.

As the story goes, houses were originally painted such bright shades to help the island’s fishermen, weary from their long journeys out at sea, find their way back.

Some guidebooks say the fairytale-feel of this island is just maintained as a tourist attraction, and that may be true.

But I still think it’s nice to imagine spotting your brightly-colored house at the end of an epic journey, your kid’s clothes blowing in the wind, welcoming you home.
